June 7th and woke up feeling fuzzy.
Im sure that had nothing to do with the goodby party we had in the city square last night.
We had a big goodbye to two Italian friends who were really dear people, they have to leave the Camino today. It was Lucca And lovely Alissanda, paella was the meal of the day, so we dined in the square next to the cathedral in Borgos, as a huge group
the square was fun as there were many different celebrations and weddings going on, plus the UEFA soccer cup final, I enjoyed watching that having been a player for so long, but then the Spaniards kept us awake all night celebrating,as their team won, its a good time when you hike out of town at 6am and the bars are still celebrating. If only I could still do that.
Today we go to the Meseta, this is a high desert plain which once your up there, is blisteringly hot, arid and the road going on and on with no trees , shade or water for miles, no one is looking forward to the next few days, but I think it will be a different kind of challenge.
The day started cool which was great, low misty clouds but not too intresting as we had a few towns to cross through.
We hiked through Hornillos and into the Meseta, a long climb and sharp stoned roads.
We did pass this poppy field which made for a break in the monotony of watching your feet go up and down.
Someone sure turned the heat up though, I don't know the temperature today but it was 100 f  plus in my boots. Irishman Shane caught up to me in need for water, I had already run out 4 km back, and we had 6 km to go. A little concerning, because they just announced that they had found the remains of a pilgrim who had been missing a few weeks, she was way of course and suposedly died of natural causes, they think she got dehydrated and heatstroke, got confused and wondered off lost. Mental comfort plays a role on these long hauls, and we were withing 2 km of the town we were to end in, and couldn't see it, now we stopped the jokes and got very serious about our predicament,, all of a sudden, in this hole in the mountain was Hontanas
we were supposed to meet Matt here, as his knee isn't doing well, and to add as an insult, someone stole his boots at the alburge. We will catch up to him tomorrow as he can make it to Fromista by bus. Tomorrow we climb back onto the Mesesta and have a long haul and a steep climb by about 10 am, here is hoping the weather plays ball.
